Positions available: 3

YouthWrite is looking for 3 creative and enthusiastic persons to assist with social media marketing and communications in preparation for Fall 2022 programming. This position requires people who can work on self-directed projects but also under direction and under seasonal deadline pressure. Excellence in editing, copy writing, proofreading, graphic design and layout and design is necessary, as well as solid experience working in Canva and across many types of social media platforms. An understanding of our camps, our clients, sponsors and our non-profit arts organization is recommended, and ideal candidates will have or be in the process of attaining a degree in communications/journalism, design, or arts and cultural management.

What we will accomplish at the end of the Internship:

  • By the end of the internship, you'll have an online portfolio of many social media posts and will have professional editorial, layout, design and marketing experience.
What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?
  1. Review past sample social media posts & templates, brand requirements & colour palettes, as well as YW's monthly planning schedule. Canva training/updating will be shared, as well.
  2. Access & select from myriad images of past YouthWrite participants & short videos. Review this current year's design elements, fonts, & colour palette.
  3. Create/edit copy, photos, & design/re-design social media posts per each of YouthWrite's platforms for Fall 2022 calendar events/holidays: YW annual fall fundraiser, YW annual general meeting, literary themes, writing contests, alumni/current participant news, important YW program details, in keeping with YW audiences and brand.
  4. Share drafts with the Director-Coordinator and the communications team, and edit according to feedback. received.
  5. Post several times per week on all platforms and engage with viewers and followers frequently with the goal of increasing YouthWrite's audience (and potential donors/future camp participants).
How will you support learners in completing the project?

The Director-Coordinator will train & orient the interns, explain YouthWrite's culture/mandate/philosophy, provide a timeline calendar for all tasks to be undertaken & completed, share previous social media plans/schedules. Check-ins will initially be frequent (daily or several times a week, as needed) via Zoom/Slack/in-person, until the social media marketing interns feel comfortable to work more independently. Then check-ins will be as needed to answer questions/concerns, assist with short-/long-term goals, provide regular verbal/written feedback on progress & social media analytics, &/or to troubleshoot & reassess, as required. Together, the communications team & student interns will meet to discuss schedule amendments, copy, marketing targets, & overall success of social media strategies.

YouthWrite believes in & values relationships, so discussions, questions, meetings & informal chats are welcome & encouraged. We want the social media interns to feel part of our organization.
