The Student:

Third Year Honours Bachelor of Early Childhood Leadership degree student.

The Internship:

  • 420 mentored field hours (volunteer or paid) in an Early Years Program; childcare, related child & family service, or a relevant government agency.
  • Typically from May-Aug (14 Weeks)

Opportunities for students to:

  • Pursue a placement expereince according to future careers in the Early Childhood Education/Care sector and/or future academic interests and goals.
  • Students will apply strategies to support continuous learning & promote effective pedagogical practices in an EY setting
  • Refine leadership competencies using the College of Early Childhood Educators Code of Ethics and Standards, and the Whole Leadership Framework (McCormick Centre).
  • Work closely with an experienced EY professional.

What ECL students can do for YOU!

  1. Build and maintain caring and responsive relationships that reflect the four foundations of learning.
  2. Apply professional knowledge of child development, learning theories and pedagogical approaches to plan, implement, document and assess an agency-based project.
  3. Demonstrate professionalism and pedagogical leadership in their communication and relationships with children, families, colleagues, and the communities in which they practise.
  4. Act as inclusive and global citizens who understand the wider world and take an active role to make the early education and care sector more equitable, fair and sustainable.
Project Examples

Examples of the work that interns can take on include but are not limited to:

  • Build relationships with community (attend meetings, develop Community of Practice, or outreach events)
  • Support and develop family engagement initiatives (i.e. workshops, tours, orientation, interviews, virtual collaborations/resources)
  • Support policy revision/development/implementation (i.e. develop agency policies on Mental Health for Educators, families and children or revise parent manuals, playgroup/classroom and camp curriculums/programs)
  • Mentor/Support educator teams in curriculum development or deepening pedagogical practices (i.e. book study, facilitate staff meeting/workshops or pedagogical discussions regarding How Does Learning Happen, or First Peoples Principles of Learning and/or Pedagogical Documentation )
  • Facilitate staff hiring/retention (i.e. create policy documents, orientation manuals, staff resources/support develop initiatives, assist with interviews/orientation)
  • Enhance facets of curriculum and pedagogy that require strengthening such as nature or risky play, loose parts pedagogy, Anti-Racist Curriculum, Inclusive Practices, child-centred or inquiry focused play. What this may look like for each agency can be very different (i.e. creating resource kits, revising policies, developing/implementing teaching and learning resources, co-constructing learning environments, play experiences, materials and/or environments)
  • Enhance/Create website or online platforms utilized by organization (i.e. newsletters/emails/social media/information and communication technologies, digital portfolios for children and families, Staff blogs)
