Shoreham Ports
Challenge Outline: Over the past two years Shoreham Port has launched a number of new activities to diversify and increase revenue streams -evaluate the effectiveness of these and make recommendations for further opportunities.
Sustainability Engagement
Challenge Outline: we would like to tackle the challenge of communicating our sustainability efforts within our new hospitality venue to our local community, particularly people who are not already engaged with, and passionate about, sustainability. In Spring 2022, we are due to open the doors of our new hospitality venue, Port Kitchen. This development is regenerating an area of the Port and therefore a key component of our post-COVID-19 economic recovery. As an EcoPort, we are working hard in the build and planning of this new development to consider sustainability at every stage. It is vital that these efforts are communicated to our local community, and not just to those that are already actively engaged with tackling climate change. Key aims/objectives: We would like to have a colouring sheet designed that provides entertainment while dining in our venue, as well as communicating our sustainability messaging to children and their parents. 1) Conduct competitor research into what other businesses and industries do to communicate their sustainability efforts to the public. Are any of these activities targeted specifically towards children and their parents? If so, what does it include? 2) What activities do children enjoy? What would they want to see on a colouring sheet? 3) Liaising with our illustrator, please propose ideas (and sketches if you wish) on what we should include on our colouring sheet, including a depiction of our sustainability mascot, Delmar the Dolphin. 4) STRETCH QUESTION: Please investigate what sustainable printing companies operate in the area and/or online, as well as where to source sustainable crayons.
Improving LGBTQ+ representation
Challenge outline: Our people are at the centre of our business, so there is nothing more important to use than attracting and attaining the right talent. We are striving to be a more diverse and inclusive employer. We wish to utilise and engage with our diverse local demographic to promote inclusivity. Specifically we’re looking to improve recruitment of new colleagues that are part of the LGBTQ+ community. Key aims/objectives: 1) Research similar sectors’ equality and inclusivity initiatives and how we compare (sectors not related to the port network) - Speak to 3 similar-sizes businesses and ask what resource they have for inclusion (if not available on their website). Do they employ a staff member that is dedicated to this cause? Do they have a budget for annual events? - Speaking to charities such as Stonewall, what would they suggest we could do? 2) What could we aim to do immediately (i.e. implement within 12 months?) 3) What could we implement in the medium term (i.e. implement within 3 years?)
