Project scope
What is the main goal for this project?

Positions available: 2

YouthWrite is looking for TWO creative and enthusiastic persons to assist with social media marketing and communications in preparation for 2024 programming. This position requires someone who can work on self-directed projects but also under direction and under seasonal deadline pressure. Excellence in editing, copy writing, proofreading, graphic design and layout and design is necessary, as well as solid experience working in Canva and across many types of social media platforms. An understanding of our camps, our clients, sponsors and our non-profit arts organization is recommended, and an ideal candidate will have or be in the process of attaining a degree in communications, marketing, design, or arts and cultural management.

As social media marketer you'll be mentored and supervised by the Director-Coordinator who will share sample social media posts and templates, as well as brand requirements and colour palettes.

You'll have access to myriad images of past YouthWrite participants and short videos created during previous seasons of YouthWrite summer camps. You'll also have access to this current year's design elements.

You'll create and edit copy, select photos, design and re-design social media posts per each of YouthWrite's platforms (and perhaps new, unexplored platforms) with attention to upcoming calendar events and holidays, literary themes, writing contests, alumni and current participant news, YouthWrite partnerships, and other important program details, in keeping with the youth/parent/donor audiences and YouthWrite's brand. Consultation with the Director-Coordinator is ongoing (either virtual, in-person, or via Zoom).

You'll work independently, but will be encouraged to share drafts with the Director-Coordinator and the communications team, and will edit according to suggestions from team members.

You'll post several times per week on all platforms and engage with viewers and followers frequently with the goal of increasing YouthWrite's audience (and potential donors/future camp participants).

What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

The YouthWrite Social Media Intern will work under the direction of the director-coordinator and communications managers to:

1. create communications strategies for capacity building, fundraising, advertising and raising the profile of YouthWrite’s summer camps and other programs;

2. to create social media and digital communications;

3. to work as part of a team;

4. to take both initiative and direction as each situation warrants;

5. to assume some responsibility for conveying YouthWrite’s (and YouthWrite partner's) messages with broad and/or targeted audiences, including members of the general public, YouthWrite Board, instructors, supervisors, parents, participants, media, donors, sponsors and other stakeholders.

Deliverables:

By the project end, the student will be able to share (and archive for future opportunities), a series of social media posts in jpeg or pdf format, specifically created for our summer camps and for marketing purposes. These sample works will have:

  • edited and proofed copy that illustrates brevity + effective messaging
  • design elements based on YouthWrite's brand
  • a variety of posts that market our camps and/or share information of interest to our followers

How will you support learners in completing the project?

The director-coordinator will train and orient the intern(s), explain the culture of YouthWrite, its mandate and philosophy, provide a timeline calendar for all tasks to be undertaken and completed, share previous social media plans and schedules. Check-ins will initially be frequent (several times a week or daily, as needed) via Zoom, Slack, or in-person, until the Social Media Marketing intern feels comfortable to work more independently. Thereafter, check-ins will be as needed to answer questions and concerns, assist with short- and long-term goals, provide regular feedback—verbal and written—on progress and social media analytics, and/or to troubleshoot and reassess as the need arises. Together, the communications team and social media intern will meet to discuss amendments to the schedule, to discuss copy, marketing targets, and overall success of social media strategies.
