We are interested in researching virtual community platforms to replace our current platform to improve member communication and engagement and to streamline administrative processes for the limited staff.

We are also in need or information management assistance to improve our record keeping processes.

PROJECT SCOPE

Three significant outcomes are possible in this project (scope is flexible based on feedback from the professor):

  • Evaluate our existing online community system (currently Google Groups) and provide feedback on how to improve community connection; this could include recommending a different software platform
  • Review our existing record-keeping system, provide and execute recommendations for improvement
  • Review and improve our internal methods of staff communication and project management, in order to effectively include a term-by-term rotation of student employees

Our goals:

  • To enhance our impact on the STEM post-secondary community
  • To increase volunteer and member engagement
  • To improve community communication and access to information
  • To increase the effectiveness of the staff and administrative functions of the organization

Through this project, it is expected that the student(s) will benefit from:

  • Acting in a consulting capacity for a dynamic non-profit organization
  • Assisting an organization meet its strategic priority of cultivating partnerships within and outside the organization
  • Analysing and providing recommendations to improve staff communication and effective project management
  • Applying research and problem-solving skills to improve a community’s online communications and information sharing capacity
  • Contributing to a project that is significant to the success of an organization and the engagement of its community members

Science Atlantic is a charitable organization representing 18 post-secondary institutes in Atlantic Canada. We have been providing networking and conference opportunities for undergraduate science students and faculty in the Atlantic region since 1962. Our activities include ten annual academic conferences in different science disciplines, lecture tours by notable scientists, awards recognizing research and science communication skills, travel assistance for students to attend conferences, and workshops for faculty and students.
