Project Examples

Requirements

Beginning in July, students in groups of 3-5 will work with your company to identify your needs and provide actionable recommendations, based on their in-depth research and analysis.

Define and Collect the Data Attributes of Interest

Your business will determine the data or variables of interest that require summary analysis. For example, your business may need to review sales by region or product group. Or perhaps your business wants to understand your customer base better by identifying the business customer mix (e.g., age, gender, region, etc.). Your business may also want to summarize your customer contacts (e.g., how many contacts are by phone, face-to-face, or online). The descriptive statistical summary project will determine and conduct the appropriate and most effective visual and numerical summary based on data type and business need (i.e., total counts, relative percent's, or comparisons).

Statistical Analysis

Using the data for the variable(s) provided, the descriptive statistical summary will do the following:

  • Determine the data type (qualitative or quantitative).
  • Apply the appropriate visual (e.g., bar chart, pie chart, side-by-side bar chart, histogram, scatterplot, time series graph) and numerical (e.g., frequency table, contingency table, mean, median, variance, inter quartile range, standard deviation) summary for the data.
  • Interpret the summary results.
  • Report any conclusions and next steps based on the summary findings.

Students will summarize, interpret, and drawn conclusions using the appropriate statistical summary tools.

Final Project Output

The final project output would include the following:

  • A clear description of the project objective
  • Visual and numerical statistical summaries of the data
  • Conclusions based on the statistical summaries
  • Recommended next ste
