Students in George Brown’s Health Informatics course will work with your organization to formulate strategies for implementation of healthcare technologies, including mHealth and virtual care.
The final project deliverable will include:
- Documents including: Project charter, Project plan, Requirements analysis document, Business requirements document, Implementation plan
- End-user training material
- A one-hour project summary presentation

Project Examples
Students will work in teams of 4 and spend 54 hours per student to understand and tackle the problem of your choosing. Students will provide a document and presentation summarizing their findings as well as provide knowledge transfer to your organization.
Project examples include but are not limited to:
- Formulate change strategies to implement appropriate health information systems technologies (HIST).
- Apply business and system analysis techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of health information systems technologies
- Integrate relevant standards and professional, ethical and legislative requirements with the appropriate health information system technologies.
- Design training and education for the effective use of HIST.
Past projects have included:
Consultant - Healthtech Consultants
- Participate in build, implementation, strategic planning and readiness assessment projects
- Mentor client project teams as necessary in project delivery and system build strategy
- Track and document risks and issues
- Analyze and document workflows
- Work directly with Healthtech team or health information system end-users; monitoring workflows, providing documentation, and optimization suggestions
- Conduct stakeholder interviews, complete gap analysis, and recommendations and contribute to the development of a summary report to be presented to the client
St Michael's Hospital
Cath Lab Upgrade
- Analyze existing documentation, including data inputs
- In consultation with stakeholders, determine new workflow for cath lab procedures
- Work with stakeholders to build the new User Interface and data entry fields
- Record action items and meeting minutes
Creation of a Telederm tip sheet
- Telederm is a program operated by Ontario Telemedicine
- Creation of a guide to show physicians when to use Telderm and how to use Telederm
Quality Improvement project - Mount Sinai ophthalmology department
- Observing a regular day in the clinic to document the current workflow
- Document the current workflow by developing a Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN model)
- Consult with stakeholders to transition to the future state workflow
- Consult with stakeholders on achieving benefits for both patients and healthcare providers with the future state workflow
- Develop a project proposal to implement future state workflow
Dental Data Software Coordinator (Dental office)
- Analysis and management of healthcare data
- Conversion of a paper-based system to adoption and implementation of dental software (ABELDent)
In terms of the students' interests in placements, they are looking for opportunities in product support, project coordinator, business analyst (gathering requirements, workflow design, and improvement), QA tester, training users in HIT, and privacy analyst. They are open to other opportunities as well.
Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:
Be available for a quick phone call with the instructor to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the course.
Provide a dedicated contact who is available to answer periodic emails or phone calls over the duration of the project to address students' questions.
Be available to attend one-hour presentations either in-person or remotely.
