The evolution of information and communication technologies is transforming the healthcare system and creating new ways of accessing and exchanging information that will impact the healthcare sector, including patients, their families and their caregivers. Students in George Brown’s Health Informatics course will work with your organization to formulate strategies for implementation of healthcare technologies, including mHealth and virtual care.

Project Examples

Students will work in teams of 4 and spend 135 hours per student to understand and tackle the problem of your choosing. Students will provide a document and presentation summarizing their findings as well as provide knowledge transfer to your organization.

Project examples include but are not limited to:

  • Formulate change strategies to implement appropriate health information systems technologies (HIST).
  • Apply business and system analysis techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of health information systems technologies
  • Integrate relevant standards and professional, ethical and legislative requirements with the appropriate health information system technologies.
  • Design training and education for the effective use of HIST.

Past projects have included:

ABAKiS Solutions

- Redesign an existing web application for autism therapy teams

- Purpose of the web application is to allows autism intervention teams to reliably record data, track progress, analyze trends and update protocols

- Goals of the project: utilize UX/UI skills to improve website navigation, responsiveness and intuitiveness for three personas (BCBA, BI, Observer)

- Features for BCBA: easily monitor results in an organized, detailed view

- Features for BI: easily record all data for a session and behavioural observations in an organized manner

- Features for observer: conveniently use the website to observe their child’s progress, better communication with teachers and autism team

- Additions to website: task list, messaging, filter/search buttons, tabs, collapsible data

- Deliverables: project charter, project plan, requirements document, website redesign using Balsamiq

Seasons Retirement Communities

- Design the prototype of a mobile health app

- Purpose of the app is to connect residents, family and friends, and caregivers with the goal of reducing social isolation in seniors

- Developed, conducted and analyzed results of survey

- Transformed survey results into requirements for three personas (residents, family and friends, caregivers)

- Features for residents: monthly activities calendar, daily menu

- Features for residents, family and friends: communication (video/voice call)

- Features for caregivers: work schedule, training, company policies, monthly activities calendar

- Deliverables: project charter, survey, project plan, requirements document, prototype build using Adobe XD

Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities (SCHC)

- Website user experience evaluation and redesign

- Purpose of the website is to provide information on programs such as Meals on Wheels, Clinics, and the Furniture Bank

- Goals of the project: gain a competitive edge in the SCHC user website experience, and in doing so, engage more clients in SCHC programming, and increase donations

- Redesign features: reduced number of keystrokes to arrive at information about a program, standardized language, improved calendar function, newsfeed, website rendering for smartphone and tablet devices (responsive design)

- Evaluate redesign using test cases and test scores

- Deliverables: project charter, project plan, requirements document, website redesign using moqups.com, test plan

Anahana Wellness

- Design the prototype of a mobile health app

- Purpose of the app is to engage the consumer in mindful chewing

- Conduct and review results of research on mindful chewing with stakeholders

- Features of the app: account creation, mindful chewing reminders, appointment booking, virtual visits, guided meditation, billing

- Deliverables: project charter, project plan, requirements document, prototype build using Figma

In terms of the students' interests in placements, they are looking for opportunities in product support, project coordinator, business analyst (gathering requirements, workflow design, and improvement), QA tester, training users in HIT, and privacy analyst. They are open to other opportunities as well.

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Be available to attend one-hour presentations either in-person or remotely.

Provide a dedicated contact who is available to answer periodic emails or phone calls over the duration of the project to address students' questions.
